Seeple Snapshot Wow! I get all of this and more COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog Anthony Scott, MPA USP I love Baltimore; let me know if you want to visit so I can give you an insiders guide! I was born and raised around the westside of Baltimore, and believe the city has great potential and opportunity to demonstrate how to gentrify with minimal displacement of current residents. I survived my first few weeks at SIPA! People go back to school for a variety of reasons, and my starting in January is a bit off cycle, but regardless of the reasons, its always a transition. Ive gone from working 8 hours a day (8 hours and 45 minutes to be exact) and being DONE with work, to always feeling like I should be studying. Ive gone from waking up at 5 am to commute 1.5 hours to work, to waking up at 8 am, walking to school in 10 minutes, and realizing that my first class isnt until 2:10PM. Ive gone from having some leisure income, to having loansagain. Regardless of the transition, the one thing I can say is that SIPA provides you with SO much support. During orientation, you have peer advisors who give you all the secrets from how best to register for classes, to where to find good pizza and cheap (but good) beer. Your deans and academic advisors are SUPER responsive, even about the most trivial matters. They really want to see you succeed, and ease your (over-achieving) anxieties and concerns. *smile* Oh, and your financial aid and career services people are also very helpful. Whatever your doubts about funding SIPA are, once you actually get here, there are TONS of scholarships, and opportunities internally and externally (everyone wants to hire SIPA students) to fund your education. I fully expect to have my tuition covered next year. The BEST resources, however, once you come to SIPAand I mean THE BESTwill be your fellow classmates. I know it may sound trite, but SIPA isnt kidding when they tell you to get to know your classma tes because they will be future leaders. People at SIPA have already been leaders! An Interview With Ross Admissions Director Blaire Moody Rideout
An Interview With Ross Admissions Director Blaire Moody Rideout by: Alison Damast on March 24, 2015 | 6 Comments Comments 27,446 Views March 24, 2015Blaire Moody Rideout, admissions director for Ross undergraduate business programBlaire Moody Rideoutââ¬â¢s background in student counseling and advising has come in handy in her job overseeing the undergraduate admissions office at the University of Michiganââ¬â¢s Ross School of Business. This is the time of year when she and her office start doling out the final decisions on applications, and some of the news can be devastating to students, especially those who have been denied admission to the school twice, first as high school seniors applying through the Preferred Admission program and then again as University of Michigan freshmen.About 22 percent of the 1,139 freshmen who applied to Ross last year fell into that category, said Moody Rideout, director of BBA admissions. She often has to advise parents and students on what the next steps should be if they donââ¬â¢t get one of the coveted 500 seats in the class, and explain how they can still have a Ross-like experience without getting a bachelor of business administration degree.ââ¬Å"I often feel that weââ¬â¢re the office of denial, not the office of admission,â⬠said Moody Rideout, who held counseling roles at the University of South Carolina and Ohio Wesleyan University before coming to the University of Michigan in 2007. ââ¬Å" A student who is turned away for regular admissions feels that it is their last shot, so that is where the counseling approach comes in. It is crucial to our process.â⬠It is getting harder than ever for students to land a seat in Rossââ¬â¢ highly regarded three-year undergraduate business program, ranked #12 in Bloomberg Businessweekââ¬â¢s most recent undergraduate ranking. Last year, the school received about 3,000 applications from high school seniors, of whom only 340 were offered a spot in the 2 014-15 class. That means only about one in ten of that pool of applicants had a chance of getting into the school, Moody Rideout said.Moody Rideout spoke with PoetsQuants for Undergradsââ¬â¢ Alison Damast about the challenges her office faces as the business major becomes more popular at the University of Michigan, how applicants can demonstrate leadership in their applications, and why she thinks more students are trying to portray themselves as entrepreneurs.High school seniors that want guaranteed admission to the Ross School apply to the schoolââ¬â¢s Preferred Admission program. How popular is that program, and just how competitive is it to get into?It is extremely popular. We started it in 2006 when we actually went from a two-year business program to a three-year business program. Preferred admission was not unique to Ross at the time because there were many other preferred options at other schools at the University of Michigan. What is unique is that at Ross we have the most competitive Preferred Admission program on campus. We have a highly-ranked business school and now high school students have the option to apply to us through the Preferred Admissions program. Those students might not come to Michigan if not for the fact that they were guaranteed to be in business school right away.Last year, we had a 50 percent increase in our Preferred Admission application pool. We went from 1,977 applications to 2,966. We didnââ¬â¢t admit any more students, we just had larger application numbers and more students enrolling who wanted to do business. There are two ways that students can go about getting into the Ross School, applying as a high school senior or applying as a University of Michigan freshman. Do students stand a better chance at getting into Ross if they decide to apply to the school their freshman year versus through the Preferred Admission program? The numbers are in their favor if they apply their freshman year. They need a GPA of 3.68, s o their GPA needs to be high and college courses are really tough. Itââ¬â¢s not that it is easier per say to get in, but the numbers are much more in their favor. We enroll a class of 500 sophomores every year and one-quarter are preferred admits and the other three-quarters are regular admits. We got 1,139 regular admit applications last year and admitted about 409 students. Thatââ¬â¢s a 36% acceptance rate, compared to the 10% or 11% acceptance rate in the Preferred Admit program. What do students applying through the regular admissions process need to do to get an edge in the admissions process? It is more than GPA. The first conversations I have every year are with the 4.0s that are not admitted. A GPA of 4.0 on the University of Michigan campus is exceptional, but if youââ¬â¢re not involved in anything on campus and your essays arenââ¬â¢t great, you arenââ¬â¢t going to be admitted. That is a hard conversation for me to have with students and their families. At Ross , we are very focused on action-based learning, leadership and being really involved in extracurricular activities. The way we assess if a student will fit into that kind of mindset is through extracurricular activities and essays. We are looking for students who are intentional about their desire to go into business, and they also have to be a leader on campus. Page 1 of 212à »

Pornography and Prostitution have much in common, both include compensated consenting adults engaging in sexual activity; however, pornography is legal, and prostitution is not. Websterââ¬â¢s dictionary defines prostitution as ââ¬Å"the act or practice of engaging in promiscuous sexual relations especially for moneyâ⬠. Although pornography is somehow widely accepted, it is essentially the same concept as prostitution, both involving consenting adults paid to perform sexual acts. While prostitution is controversial, states making prostitution legal, and equal to pornography, would have positive effects on the nationââ¬â¢s economy by making the profession safer, decreasing the crime rate, and helping the government financially. According to research by Brents and Hausbeck, both professors of sociology at the University of Nevada: In 1985 and 1986, the Nevada Administrative Code imposed sexually transmitted disease and HIV tests on legal, working prostitutes (NAC Chapter 441A010-A325 and 441A775-A815). The result is that each person who applies for employment as a prostitute must take a blood test for HIV and syphilis and must submit a cervical specimen to be tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia. These tests must be negative before a prostitute can be licensed to beginwork. Every week thereafter while working in a brothel, prostitutes must see local physicians, who conduct PAP smears for gonorrhea and chlamydia and monthly blood tests for syphilis and HIV. If a working girl tests positive for anything other than HIV, she is unable to work until treated, cured, and her physician reinstates her health card. If she tests positive for HIV, she can no longer work as a legal brothel pros titute. Food Science for Microwave Heating of Food - myassignmenthelp
Question: Discuss about theFood Science for Microwave Heating of Food. Answer: Introduction Microwave oven is one of the biggest revolutions in the food technology. The modern cooking as well as lifestyle is heavily dependent on the microwave oven. The oven can not only heat up the food, but it can cook also using the microwave energy, which is electromagnetic radiation. The instrument acts very fast and efficiently as it transfers the energy to all the molecules inside the food, and with the help of the water content present in the food, it gets heated evenly (Gould 2012). History of microwave oven goes back to the time of World War II. Dr. Percy Spencer, an American electrical engineer, first found that electric waves of the radar technology can heat the food. He founded the first commercially available microwave oven and named it Radarange (Chen et al. 2014). In 1967, Amana Corporation invented the first countertop microwave oven (Regier, Knoerzer and Schubert 2016). The microwave oven has gone through many technological changes in the past fifty years. The purpose of th is report is to highlight the impact of the radiation on human health. Problem statement It is a matter of debate for long that, since, the oven applies highly powerful radiation on the food; it activates many different types of bacterias and may change the nature of the nutritional elements in the food, which may not be good for health. Hence, whether the food, heated in microwave oven, is nutritional and good for health is to be addressed in this report. Objectives of the report The objectives of the report are to find out the pros and cons of the microwave heating of the food and whether the powerful electric radiation is harmful for the human health. The possible solution of the problem is to use ultrasound for food processing and preservation. Body and discussion Overview of current developments/advances in the microwave heating technology Microwaves are a part of the electromagnetic waves with a frequency ranging between 300 MHz and 300 GHz, corresponding to the range of wavelength between 1mm to 1m (Datta and Rakesh 2013). In the food processing activities, microwaves are applied for tempering, drying, cooking, defrosting frozen food, baking and sterilization. Since its invention, the technology of microwave heating has become very much advanced. Initially the machine only had the capacity to heat the food. Later on, the advancement of technology enabled the options for cooking, grilling and baking too. In the initial stage, the high frequency radio waves were generated through vacuum tube radio transmitters, which were used in microwave ovens (Gould 2012). Overtime, short waves were used through shortwave transmitters. Lower frequency dielectric heating is similar to induction heating, having the effect of electromagnetic heating, with near-field effects existing in an electromagnetic cavity. This cavity is quite sm all compared to the wavelength of the electromagnetic field. In the modern microwaves, the dielectric heating technology with radio frequency (RF) heating is used. In these technology, lower frequency radiation is used which has a wavelength small relative to the cavity and it affects the polarized molecules in the food by a quickly alternating electric field (Meda, Orsat and Raghavan 2017). Developments in process design Process design refers to the activity for determination of the workflow, equipment requirement and implementation needs for a specific method or process. The process design of a microwave oven is illustrated in the figure below. Figure 1: Process design of a microwave oven (Source: Sce.uhcl.edu 2013) Equipment developments A microwave oven consists of the following equipments. A high voltage source of power, in form of simple transformer or electric power converter, passing the energy to magnetron; high voltage capacitor, which is connected to the magnetron and the transformer and to the chassis via a diode; a cavity magnetron, converting the high voltage energy into the micro radiation; microcontroller, which is a magnetron control circuit; short wave guide, metallic cooking chamber, a turntable and a digital or manual control panel (Puligundla et al. 2013). The design of the machine has transformed quite rapidly in the past few years, when people started to use it in their households. The size has become compact and the new machines also offer autocook options with preloaded combination of time and temperature for specific recipes and convection heating technology (Sun 2012) New applications in food processing / preservation The food industry is now starting to adopt new technologies for food processing and preservation. New research studies have found that application of ultrasound technology has been beneficial for the processing and preservation of food. Ultrasonication is referred to as the application of the high intensity waves of sound at the frequencies between 16 kHz and 100 MHz (Majid, Nayik and Nanda 2015). In the food industry, the ultrasound is applied for microbial inactivation along with foaming, defoaming, degassing, deaeration, cooking, freezing and crystallization, drying, meat tenderizaton, filtration, brining, pickling and marinating, extraction, homogenization or emulsifying, fermenting, cutting with ultrasonic knife, cleaning, and enzyme inactivation (nver 2016). It has been seen that ultrasound has been effective in many traditional food processing and preserving operations and innovative appliances and equipment have been developed to implement the new technology. This technology helps in reducing the time of food processing as it delivers high reproducibility of food, reduces the food processing cost, simplifies the particle manipulation resulting in higher purity of the food product using very less time than the traditional food processing systems (Jambrak and Herceg 2014). This technology has some advantages, such as, effective micro-mixing, mass transfer of faster energy, reduction of thermal and concentration gradients, selective extraction, faster start up, reduced temperature, reduced size of equipment, increased production and elimination of the steps of the processes. The processing and preserving steps performed under this technology are thought to be affected partly by the cavitation phenomena and the mass transfer enhancement (Chemat, Huma and Khan 2011). However, application of the ultrasound technology also has some disadvantages. According to Tang (2015), production of free radicals can occur, which can damage the food and its nutritional value. Application of this technology requires high level of expertise and highly efficient appliances as selection of appropriate amplitude, temperature, power, intensity, time and pressure is extremely critical to get the desired result. Effect on food quality and safety It has been a matter of debate for long that if the food heated or cooked in the microwave is good for health. The biggest concern is if the heating process kills the nutrients of the food items. The technology uses shorter radio waves to cook or heat the food, which are quite selective as they affect only the water and few other molecules which are electrically asymmetrical, with one end positively and the other end negatively charged. The microwaves make these molecules vibrate and build up the thermal energy faster. Regarding the question of killing the nutrients in the food, it is found that, some nutrients, especially, vitamin C breaks down very easily when heated; and since, microwaves are shorter, they help in preserving those nutrients (Ranadheera et al. 2017). Similarly, in case of vegetables, when they are boiled in water or fried, some of the nutritional value is washed out, but when steamed in microwave oven, the easily breakable good nutrients of the food do not wash awa y (Tang 2015). The best way to retain the food nutrients is to cook them quickly and heat them in a very short span of time by using very little amount of liquid. Microwave provides this scope, which is beneficial for health. However, the food can lose its nutritional value from the microwaves also if it is not cooked using the right amount of temperature. Different types of food require different time and temperature and hat needs to be maintained. For example, raw fish, meat and eggs require minimum 60 degree centigrade to be safe for health while the vegetables require less temperature (Regier, Knoerzer and Schubert 2016). Microwave heating of food has a major challenge of unevenness in the heating of food, as the temperature is distributed unevenly depending on the shape of the food item. This causes a potential safety issue. The disease causing bugs can only be killed through microwave when the correct combination of temperature and time is applied throughout the whole portion of the food. Temperature above 60 degree centigrade can kill all bugs known to produce food-borne illness, while some toxins produced by those bugs can be heat tolerant and stay in the cooked food even after applying the correc t combination of time and temperature (Chandrasekaran, Ramanathan and Basak 2013). Hence, appropriate process of storing the food is important to retain the nutritional value. Conclusion Microwave oven has become a household name in the past few years. It has been a revolutionary invention for the food industry for cooking food using shorter radio waves. It has been found that microwaves are good for preserving the nutritional values of the food as it involves very short span of heating and shorter radio waves. However, for high risk food items, such as, meat, fish and eggs, the combination of the time and temperature is critical, which might not produce the desired result of high nutritious food. New technologies, such as, ultrasound, are being developed, which may be a substitute for the microwave heating in future. However, with the advancement of technology, microwave ovens are improving and are expected to be more widely used in the food industry and in households. Alfred Nobel Essay Example For Students
Alfred Nobel Essay The inventor of dynamite was a very important roll to take part in. The ultimate inventor of it was a mane named Alfred Nobel. Before dynamite, miners had to use nitrogen to blow holes in rock and other things. However it is too volatile and can explode incredibly easily. Alfred changed all this. nbsp;Alfred Nobel was born on October 21st 1833 in Stockholm. He studied their until1842 when his family moved to St. Petersburg in Russia. Since his father was an influential inventor and industrialist the family moved from country to country. Alfred gained the fluency in 5 different languages, Swedish, Russian, English, French, and German, but was always proud of his Swedish Background. In his teens his father sent him to learn chemistry in France. He gained interest in explosive nitroglycerin. And studied until he founded the first ever nitroglycerin factory in the world, but found it was too volatile to work with, and too many miners were dying using it. He began experimenting on how to control the substance. He wanted something that could absorb the nitroglycerin and not still have the same power. He Found that a substance called Kieselguhr. This substance consisted of (diatomeus earth) marine organisms diatoms. This way the explosive could be transported easily and detonated from a safe distance. It saved laves and time. He would name it Dynamite and got a patent for it in 1867. Throughout his life he had poor health but was not worried about it because he expected many advances in medicine. He once experimented with his theories on blood transfusions. These attempts failed and was back on with his chemistry. From an early age Alfred had written and read quite a bit and he had very good writing skills. He wrote many poems and even a play or two only to destroy almost all of them. By his death in 1896 he had established companies in some ninety locations in twenty countries and earned over SEK 31.5 million. His will was made by himself with no legal help because he learned in the past not to like or trust lawyers. Almost all of his money was to be divided into five equal parts and distributed in the form or prizes to those who during the preceding year have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind. Physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and peace. His family had many rejections to this but it still went through. It is sure that Alfred Nobel contributed a great deal to chemistry and the world and has a large diversity of achievements. He lived an unhealthy life only to live a healthy afterlife. Many people will benefit from the Nobel prizes including such people as Mother Theresa and Ernest Rutherford. It is a good deed and will keep the human race alive just a little longer if people are this smart.

While there may be some instances where you need to use a different format, it's important to keep your samples simple for those students who really don't understand the point of the essay. These forms are the same exact document you will get in college or high school, with the only difference being the letterhead and address. These sample letters are simply for practice purposes and can only serve as a basis.Rememb er, these samples are a framework of how to write a sample paragraph essay for middle school. However, keep in mind that not all essays written for a certain class are going to fit the same basic outline. Sometimes it will take a bit more work to craft a good middle school essay that is attractive and interesting.Even if you are writing a middle school essay for a particular class, always keep in mind that an essay that is too long will end up as something that is uninteresting. No one likes to read something that they don't enjoy reading. As an essay has to stand out, it also has to be short and to the point. If you don't feel like writing a thousand words then you may want to try a shorter version or one with one sentence for the middle of the essay. Some parents have felt as though their child's Middle School Reading is so great that they don'twant to sacrifice it because of being short. However, the fact of the matter is that you can write longer essays, but if you do, you may wa nt to consider what the essay is actually about. Are you looking to build character for your child? Do you want to reveal their creativity? If your middle school writing is a more personal essay, then you may want to consider breaking it up into several sections. You may want to include a one-paragraph introduction to the topic, then include the opening paragraphs. Then follow that up with a conclusion or final paragraph. It will be up to you to determine how long you want the essay to be, but you must remember that the only rule that applies to middle school is that it should be shorter than your teacher's required writing. This is to make it easier for students to comprehend and to allow you to respond to any questions or concerns they may have.Lastly, you must realize that everyone is different and Middle School Writes is no exception. So don't be afraid to ask your own mom or dad how they like their writing to be shorter or longer.

Suspense and Crime Fiction Essay Example
Suspense and Crime Fiction Essay Crime Fiction, more than any other genre, engages the reader through the art of suspense. AThrough analysing, watching and reading ââ¬Å"Lamb to the Slaughterâ⬠by Roald Dahl, an episode of Poirot ââ¬Å"The Third Floor Flatâ⬠by Agatha ChristieChristopher Gunning and ââ¬Å"The Red Headed Leagueâ⬠by Arthur Doyle, creates a great overlook on how each Crime Fiction story creates suspense. Whilst Dahl uses setting and narrative to create suspense, Christie uses characters to create suspense and Doyle uses plot development to create suspense. Roald Dahlââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Lamb to the Slaughterâ⬠engages the reader through the art of suspense by using setting and narrative voice. This is can be shown through because even though neither characters say much about the setting, you can tell by the way Mary Maloneyââ¬â¢s thoughtsinks about her home and her husband. The narrationIt automatically gives the idea of a warm and inviting home with the impression of a loving wife. For example when she is patiently waiting for husband to return home from work. NEED TO PUT IN A QUOTE FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE STORY ââ¬â MAYBE FROM WHEN SHE IS WAITING PATINENTLYThis shows without her even saying anything, you understand whatââ¬â¢s going on. The storyIt is written in third person limited omniscient narration which means the reader knows some of the thoughts and feelings of Mary but not her husband or the police officers. This demonstrates that Dahl wants the reader, to feel as though because there is little information given, you have to think outside the box and figure out the untold pieces of the story. ââ¬Å"Lamb to the Slaughterâ⬠engages the reader through suspense by having to as you must solve the mystery through setting and narrative voice. In the past few years it has become more and more prevalent that our nationââ¬â¢s schools are in trouble. With reports of school violence on the rise, and studentââ¬â¢s performances dropping, what can be done to help children learn? There is an alternative out there; one that offers students a place to learn safely and at their own pace. Today, I am going to show you some of the major problems in the public schools, and some of the many reasons why home schooling is the best alternative, why it is in the fact the best method of education available today. First, I want us to look at the significant problems in our countryââ¬â¢s school systems. To begin with, why would we even consider sending children into places that even the adults that work there do not feel safe? According to a survey by the U.S. Department of Education 47% of teachers see physical conflicts and weapons possession as a serious problem in their school. In 1997 alone there were 424,150 crimes reported in public schools. This includes several thousand incidents of rape, robbery and physical attacks. Author Robert Maranto asks the question, ââ¬Å"How can students possibly concentrate on learning when they have to worry about someone attacking them after class?â⬠(72) Another problem with public schools is money. It costs taxpayers millions of dollars every year to keep schools running. And the money is not being used successfully. High-speed Train Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
High-speed Train - Essay Example According to Secretary Ray LaHood, "8 billion dollars has been set aside for high speed rail. What jump starts our opportunity in America is the President's initiative that Congress passed to put $8 billion in the economic recovery" (Secretary Ray LaHood, D.O.T) I believe that the construction and usage of high speed train transportation between these 2 metropolitan areas would effectively reduce pollution and congestion, as it will take many cars off the roads. It is estimated that about 170,000 vehicles travel the I-15 into Las Vegas. Woody Woodrow, who is a resident of Las Vegas and a native of Los Angeles, stated that "if the price was right and the timing was right and it took less than a flight to get here, I would absolutely take it. I think it's a great idea" (Woodward Woody, Las Vegas resident) High speed rail can be said to be a proven technology, as decades of experience on the use of high speed rail in other parts of the world have shown. Thus, high speed rail provides a comfortable and convenient way for Americans to travel from one city to another. These 2 cities should endeavor to avail themselves of this technology in a comprehensive manner, as there has been heavy investment in this mode of mass transit. The population of both cities is expected to continue to rise significantly over the next few decades and although an inability to travel quickly by high speed rail between Los Angeles and Las Vegas might not currently look like a major deficiency, it probably would appear to be so in the next few decades. According to Wilton Woods (1989) "future intercity future intercity passenger mobility will be dependent on fully utilizing all of the available options. However, much of the criticism of high speed rail is based on concerns about its cost-effectiveness in the ne ar to medium term. This is of particular concern since HSR is likely to rely more heavily than other modes (automobile, air, and intercity bus) on general tax revenues as opposed to user fees/taxes, although the user fees/taxes that support those other modes may not cover their so-called externality costs i.e. costs that those modes impose on other people, such as environmental pollution and deaths and injuries due to crashes" (Wilton Woods 1989) Critics of high speed rail travel say that it is not very cost effective, but numerous benefits have been cited in support of the development of high speed rail, including the reduction of pollution and energy usage in the transportation sector, the potential to alleviate airport and highway congestion, improving transportation safety, promoting economic development, the provision of more options for travelers, and increasing the reliability of transport by increasing redundancy in the transportation system. Alleviation of congestion in airports and highways High speed rail has the capability of relieving air traffic and highway congestion in heavily traveled corridors. The use of high speed rail

Tax avoidance and evasion schemes Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Tax avoidance and evasion schemes - Assignment Example The government has made tax evasion and avoidance one of its key priorities so as to reduce the deficit and boost the exchequer (Alan 2011). Tax evasion is illegal way of minimizing taxes thus stiff penalties are involved on individual or corporate bodies who evade taxes. Unintentional mathematical errors in tax returns are not considered to be tax evasion (McGee 2012). For example, if an employee who is in a tax bracket of 25% contributes 2000, he will save 500 (McGee 2012). Another benefit with defined contribution retirement plan is that the contributions made by the employee to the scheme are invested to a mutual fund. ... Such expenses include qualified parking, transit passes and van pool commuting. These savings made from the payroll are deductible for tax purposes thus tax payable is minimized (Alan 2011). c) Flexible spending account This account is also referred to as an expense reimbursement account designed for employees who pay for the child or parent care. FSA helps employees fund medical and dental expenses through salary deduction to out of pocket unreimbursed health care expenses limited by law to $2,500 annually and depended care up to a maximum of $5,000 annually (McGee 2012). Example includes prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs and annual deductibles. d) High income child benefit charge According to the Finance Act 2012 section 681B, a person is only legible to claim the high income child benefit charge if personal income for the year exceeds ?50,000 (Great Britain 2011). Also, when either a person or his partner are entitled to receive child benefit, or get contributions from someone else who claims Child Benefit for a child who lives with you..If you are liable to the tax charge and your income increases or drops, this can affect whether you continue to be liable or how much tax charge you have to pay. As ABC Convenient Store is located 5 miles south of the city of Muscat and 2 minute walk distance by citys main road, which is used by thousands of commuters on daily basis between to the middle of city or just taking a shortcut to south of city. We feel that right location provides value to customer and convenience both. Speed of Service:Ã As nowadays consumers are always short of time and wants quality with speed of service, therefore it is also one of the major keys to success factors for convenience store industry in todays environment particularly. Convenience and value are both achieved only when the potential customers can easily locate the items they want to buy, where in return they get fast friendly and efficient service. In short the store is easy to shop. Availability: Availability of products/ items is another key factor for success of any convenient store, as each customer have different taste and needs, hence they have their own favorite brand names that they want to purchase, which any good convenience store must carry in order to fulfill potential customers needs. On the other hand the Omani citizens particularly are brand conscious and want items with big brand names, where residents of other nationality living and working in Oman, are more price conscious. Therefore it is necessary that products/ items for both customers segment must be made available. 4.0 Government support and rules and regulations 5.0 The Reason for the Convenient Store business The living standards of the Omani citizen are growing day by day as Government of Oman has taken major steps within last 20 years to increase the living standards. Therefore as of the majority of Omani citizens are upper middle class who are brand conscious and willing to pay anything to buy product required. On the other hand the convenient store industry has been growing on daily basis as people are shifted towards convenient store due to convenience and shortage of time in todays world. According to Government stats and research the convenient store in Oman is growing constantly at a rate of over 110% over last ten years. 5.1 Industry Analysis Summary Porter five forces model has been used widely with the purpose of analyzing a particular industry with a view to determine the level of intensity in terms of attractiveness and competitiveness within industry. This model consist of forces which are very close to any company and that can affect its capability badly to generate profits for owners by serving its customers effectively. Porter five forces model uses the following: Threat of potential new entrants, bargaining power of buyers, bargaining power of suppliers, Threat of substitutes and Determinants of Rivalry among Existing Competitors, in order to analyze the nature of competitiveness in any industry. Determinants of Rivalry among Existing Competitors The rivalry among existing competitors in Oman in retail store industry is being considered as high, as firms are competing severely with other with a view to capture high customer market share. There are many giant convenience stores in retail industry particularly in Muscat, who has gained majority of market share, where on the other hand small convenient stores like ABC Convenient Store, are competing each other to capture the remaining market share, specifically of convenient stores surrounding area at least. Therefore they are trying new developments in marketing, introducing new promotions, creativity of innovative ideas, which has led small stores achieved their target level of market share. Hence competitive rivalry in Omans retail industry is considered a high threat for existing convenient stores. Threat of potential new entrants Threat of new entrants into the retail industry within Muscat, Oman is medium, as there are very less product differences between products provided by convenient stores; furthermore cost to enter the market is relatively low. It is further assumed that convenient store items/products are easily purchased at wholesale prices or discounts at bulk purchases. By analyzing all factors including high growth in trends for Oman retail industry exclusively, further barriers to entry are relatively very low compared to other industries; therefore it can be take for granted that ABC Convenient Store may face further competition with new entrants. Threat of substitutes There are only few substitutes available for convenient store items which do not entirely replace the use of existing products by customers but may bring in new innovative ideas to develop new products or reduce the direct costs in producing the same products. In particularly the substitutes of any products may limit the level of generation of revenues and hence profits, in an industry by keeping the profit margins down. However, the greater the convenient stores could create uniqueness for their products the greater the likelihood of success. Likewise already discussed the availability of products, customer service and location of the convenient stores would be the key factors, which could not only create sustainable competitive advantage but could add significant value in overall earnings of the ABC Convenient Store. Therefore threat of substitutes is considered as low in retail/ convenient store industry. Bargaining power of suppliers The power of suppliers for small convenient stores like ABC Convenient Store can be prejudiced by key players in supermarkets and grocery chain stores. Because they are being able to negotiate better discounted and promotional prices compared to small convenient stores from suppliers/ manufacturers, which small convenient stores are unable to match due to high purchasing prices of same products. Therefore there is major threat as giant players always dictate the prices and purchase large amount of quantity at once, where small convenient stores are left with fewer products at high prices. Hence it is being analyzed the bargaining power of suppliers is high particularly for small convenient stores. Bargaining power of buyers Nowadays customers are aware of everything and they have more choices to buy from, therefore customers acts are considered as powerful force in making prices down. If any product is expensive in any store than they can go and purchase the required products from other convenient store providing lesser or discounted prices. In addition because product is a type of commodity item and consumers have no choice but to continue consumption, therefore we can see high growth in small convenient store if and only prices are matched with giant players in the industry. On the other hand, location and varieties of products provided may reduce this bargaining power. In addition the overall environment, customer service and location of the ABC Convenient Store would attract the customers. We can assume that large number of small convenient stores will be providing similar products and services as ABC Convenient Stores. Due to these reasons the overall industry looks more attractive and profitable. 6.0 Market Size and Growth According to our research, the main customers are males and females, ages 15 to 40. In addition, according to recent trends in Oman, many small and large stores are trying to capture market share of persons with age of more than 40, particularly females. We are expecting that by providing better customer services, we would be able to increase the number of customers of aged over 40. 7.0 The Choice of Location with reasons thereof ABC Convenient Store is a new Startup convenient store business within Muscat city. The commercial building has convenient store for rent out. It is located 5 miles south of the city of Muscat and 2 minute walk distance by citys main road, and is the main street all the way through city and is used by thousands of commuters on daily basis between to the middle of city or just taking a shortcut to south of city. Therefore its the best location for convenient store. The total area of convenience store is around 500 sq feet, where majority of the portion will be used for shelves. 8.0 Proposed Customers 9.0 Competitor Analysis The ABC Convenient Store may face little competition from other small and large convenient stores. Furthermore the main competition that ABC Convenient Store may face is from large enterprises that have established convenience stores within fuel stations. But we are expecting that our location will create competitive advantage which shall tackle the competition may face by ABC Convenient Store in near future. 10.0 Buying Patterns and Sales Strategy The convenience stores are generally small retail outlets with area of 500 to 2000 sq feet. The products or items normally sold at convenience store are: over the counter medicines, household groceries, soft drinks, cold drinks, some non food items, cigarettes, and dairy products. The convenience stores are mostly located on busy main roads and are regularly open 24 hours a day seven days a week. As name suggests, they not only sell products or items but also convenience to customers. ABC Convenient Store will aim to provide typical items of convenience store at a competitive price, so that items that customers purchase shall urge to visit again, which will increase the average sale per customer. The main focus of sales staff will be on customer service and always inquire clients if they have been able to locate and found the whole thing that they need. In case, they have not found they need, then these particular items shall be made available in stocks upon request by customers. 11.0 Strategy and Implementation Summary ABC Convenient Store will be using a strategy of impressive customer service. Where, companys initial emphasis would be to build same reputation as before, so that potential customers within town are targeted comfortably. The ABC Convenient Stores main competitive edge will be its prominent location, as it is conveniently located on the corner of where everyone must pass in order to leave and return home, it also allows the local community to walk or ride a bike to the convenient store. ABC Convenient Store intends to stock the shelves with items local residents need and want, with items ranging from milk to over the counter medicines and everything in between. If customers have requests for items not in stock then ABC Convenient Store will stock them. 11.1 Self Analysis 12.0 Competitive Advantage The competitive advantages, which ABC Convenient Store will have over its main competitors within Muscat, are: ABC Convenient Stores main competitive advantage is its position and its location as in front of Main Street.
